How to make wax melts with biodegradable glitter

Glitter wax melts are really popular right now and we completely understand why, they’re gorgeous! Today we’re going to run through how you can make your own glitter wax melts and also share some brilliant small businesses who sell glitter wax melts using Glamavan glitter - perfect if you don’t have time to make your own.

How do you make wax melts with biodegradable glitter?

If you fancy giving them a go, here’s the method…

You will need:

  • Wax (soy wax is a popular choice for wax melts and is also vegan friendly)

  • Wax melt mould

  • Fragrance oil

  • Candle dye

  • Glamavan eco glitter

  • Melting pot

  • Thermometer

  • Scales

Method:

Step 1 - Weigh out enough wax for your chosen mould, pour it into your melting pot or Bain Marie and warm gently on a medium to low heat.

Step 2 - Whilst the wax is melting away, it’s time to prep your wax melt moulds.

Top tip: Sometimes glitter floats in the wax when using silicone moulds so it sets in the wax rather than at the top, so clam shell moulds could be a great option as it tends to stay at the top.

Take a pinch of Glamavan eco glitter and sprinkle a little into the bottom of each wax melt mould.

Step 3 - Once your wax has completely melted, give it a stir and check the temperature to make sure it’s no higher than 65°. If it’s above this temperature, just let it cool off for a few minutes. Once it’s at that magic temperature then it’s time to add a little colour if you wish.

A little goes a long way, so add the dye in teeny tiny amounts to get your desired shade and make sure you stir the wax thoroughly to distribute it.

Step 4 - Happy with the dye? Great! It’s time to add fragrance. It’s usually recommended that you use around 10% fragrance oil. E.g. If your mould makes 100g of wax melts, it should be 90g wax and 10g fragrance oil. Once your fragrance is measured out and added, put the melting pot back on a low heat and stir thoroughly.

Step 5 - Once your wax is around 55°-60°, it’s time to get pouring! Transfer your wax from the melting pot into a pouring jug to make it easier to pour the wax into the moulds.

Top tip: Warm up your pouring jug before pouring the wax into it, otherwise the wax may start to set in the jug!

Step 6 - Leave your glitter wax melts to set for about 4 hours and wait 24 hours before melting them to ensure the fragrance has enough time to infuse.

Then it’s time to melt and enjoy! The glitter will add a lovely touch of sparkle to your wax melts and will look beautiful sitting atop of your wax burner.

(Warning: Be careful when making your wax melts. Keep them away from young children and pets.)

Is it safe to use Glamavan glitter in wax melts?

Yes, when it comes to making glitter wax melts it’s best to use a biodegradable plastic free glitter such as Glamavan glitter. We source our glitter from Bioglitter™, who uses natural and plant-derived material as the basis for the glitter. It also breaks down in a matter of weeks in the natural environment unlike plastic glitters.

Typical plastic-based glitters are microplastics and can release harmful chemicals and dioxins when heated, which are not good for you and your family’s health.
